CV Tips

  • One page is too short, four generally too long – two or three pages are fine
  • All contact details, summary of education and qualifications, including BSc grade and language fluency should go on the first page, followed by your current or last job. You should always list employers in reverse chronological order.
  • Describe each employer briefly. Most people have heard of Microsoft, but many companies or the relevant division you worked for require some explanation / introduction.
  • Give a brief description of what you do/are, or were responsible for - and highlight with some key achievements /responsibilities (number of staff, value of sales, reduction in costs, length of projects etc.).
  • If you have any peculiar or company specific job titles that mean nothing to the outside world, give a generic description of what you did.
  • Future employers do not need as much detail about what you did 5 years ago, still ten years ago, a single line may suffice.
  • Do not include too many hobbies or interests, it looks like you are never at work!
  • Before submitting your CV check it thoroughly for errors, not just for spelling and grammar, but also to make sure it is a clear representation of you.

Interview Tips

  • Ensure you have a map and/or directions.
  • Do your homework, use the internet or other resources to gain additional information on the company and its products.
  • Check the title, name and pronunciation of the person(s) you are meeting.
  • Dress appropriately, all kinds of assumptions are made on your appearance.
  • Be punctual, allow plenty of time to locate the premises, park the car etc.
  • Prepare yourself to answer standard interview questions.
  • Prepare a list of questions you may wish to ask.

At the interview

  • Remember to smile and be polite!
  • Take the interview seriously, your attitude is every bit as important as your qualifications.
  • Look the interviewer in the eye. Look and act alert.
  • Be enthusiastic and show you are reasonably informed about the organisation and the role.
  • Listen when the interviewer is talking but by all means ask intelligent / searching questions.
  • Avoid one word answers (especially No).
  • Be honest, but also ensure you actively promote your skills and potential.
  • Don’t over answer questions. Stick to the point.
  • If you are not sure, or do not understand the question always ask for clarification.
  • If you do not know the answer to a question, say so.
  • At the end of the interview ask questions.
  • As the interview draws to a close ask how you have done.
  • Thank the interviewer for his or her time.

After the interview

Remember to call your consultant immediately to explain what happened so we can progress the opportunity with the client.
